What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a plain-text file, served at a site’s root (yourdomain.com/llms.txt), that gives AI agents a structured, accurate summary of the site — what it offers, its key pages, and its policies. It follows the llmstxt.org convention and is the AI-era counterpart to robots.txt and sitemap.xml.

Why does llms.txt matter?

AI agents parse text and structure, not design. When they read a site without guidance, they guess. An llms.txt hands them a curated summary so they describe the business correctly. As more agents adopt the convention, an accurate llms.txt becomes basic hygiene for AI visibility.

How is llms.txt different from robots.txt?

robots.txt tells crawlers where they may go; sitemap.xml lists URLs. Neither explains what a business is or sells. llms.txt carries meaning — a human-readable, machine-parseable description of the site — which is exactly what AI agents need to answer questions about you.

FAQ

Is llms.txt required?

No — it’s an emerging convention, not a mandate. Adoption among AI agents is growing and uneven. Shipping one is cheap and additive, and AgentFront also measures which agents actually read it, so its value is verifiable.
